I don’t think I ever officially updated on my work situation. A few days before giving my notice at Scientific-Atlanta, I thought about how perfect my job is to be done from home. All I need is a computer and I am good to go. I proposed the idea of telecommuting to my boss. He checked with his boss and this was their proposal: be an independent contractor for 6 months and then be rehired and telecommute.
This wasn’t exactly what I wanted. There are no benefits, I get paid by invoicing which means a 60 day delay, I have to drive in one day a week on my dime, and my taxes are higher. But if it is exactly what I want at the end of 6 months, then I’ll go with it for now.
I have only been working from home for two days, but I can already see the good and bad. It’s great that I am home to let people in and take care of little things, but there are lots of distractions at home too. We’ll see how good my self-discipline is.
Madison has gotten a little more aggressive in her begging. Initially she would sit by the table and wait till we were done. Then she would get a small bite. Now anytime there is food she sits, but soon tires, and puts her head on your leg. That’s cute the first couple times, but it gets annoying. Especially when she does it to company. Wade has been making her staying her kennel while we eat and she isn’t happy about it.
Today I hid out upstairs. The movers are really nice guys but I have been with them for two days straight. I took Madison, my book, and my Buffy DVDs, and tucked away in the upstairs bedroom. Talk about being a lump on a log!
Almost no room in the house can be completely put right. My sunroom is painted but we have no furniture for it. The dining room is okay but we don’t have a table. The living room is going to be repainted. We aren’t putting anything upstairs because we are going to rip up the carpet, refinish the hardwood floors, and remodel a bedroom and bathroom. This means that most of the boxes are just somewhere, which makes even a little unpacking difficult. Oh well, it’s a treasure hunt every time you look for a box!
The sunroom was initially a canary yellow – much too bright. After my oops incident, we needed to buy more paint for the second coat. We got a more “gold” color, but it is still not quite right. What we really want is the color you see in the “Oops Paint” post below (which is not what the walls looked like in real life). We are debating about trying another coat now or just living with it for a while.
Well the movers came today. They were quite a bit late (evidently they got stuck in Lebanon, TN), but they arrived en mass and got right to work. Now I have boxes everywhere, but I didn’t have to do any of it myself! The only thing broken in the packing was a ramekin, which I happen to have a million of. The woman was so apologetic, which was nice, but I showed her how many there were. She laughed.
My car is filled to the top. I can only see out the side windows, which makes backing up a little difficult. Wade and I decided to stay at a hotel tonight since our mattresses are in boxes. I was following him and at some point realized there were flashing blue lights behind me. The cop was in a mustang and so low to the ground that I never saw him – especially without my rear view mirror. Anyway, I got a ticket (boo hoo) – who gets a ticket following someone??
The evening was saved with a trip to Maggiano’s with some good friends. Once we were all at the right restaurant, we had a great time with lots of laughs. There was much discussion on whether sharks were mammals or fish. Ryan used the power of the internet (after he got home) and confirmed his belief that sharks are indeed fish. Evidently the true test for being a mammal is that they nurse their young. Wade thought it was live birth. And now it is past my bedtime!
Home Depot has its Oops Paint, which I like to buy, and I have mine. Only mine was more of a paint accident. We finally got the walls in the sunroom ready to paint after much scraping, sanding, patching, and priming. Wade was a slavedriver so we painted late into the night (actually he went to bed quite a bit before me). It was about 1:30 am when I was finally finished. As I was carrying all of the paint to the garage, I dropped the can of yellow paint. (I was going to hammer on the lids in the garage.) I knew Wade wouldn’t want a yellow shop floor so I spent another 30 minutes cleaning up. I was actually rather impressed that I got it all up. Thank goodness for latex paint, old towels, and a big bucket of water.
Here is a preview of the sunroom:
Wade is a design major, which can mean a lot of things. He comes up with some crazy ideas, but some good ones too. My favorite was the idea to paint the closets in the guest bedroom red. The walls are a pale yellow. The bedspread in the room is a plaid that matches both of those colors. Anyway, here are the before and after pictures.

It wasn’t much and we actually got some help (labor is cheap!) laying the tile, but finally one thing is done. I think the fireplace looks lots better. We still have to sand down and seal the inside, but the hard part is done.

For those of you who don’t know, my dad is a race car driver (at least on the weekends). He recently had his car repainted and is very excited. I have to admit that it looks great! If you are interested, his website is RedLine Racing.
This is one of his older paint jobs.
